Starting a PR Company
Starting a PR agency is one step many PR professionals consider in taking as a natural sequel to their careers. However, it is not as simple as it sounds like.
Motivation is the first thing in helping someone start on its own. With the right kind of motivation, almost anything can be done, but first one need to figure out which one it is. If you are planning to open a PR company in order to sell it at one point, then you need an outlook from the beginning. If, instead, you just want to build your own business in order to maintain a certain level of lifestyle that also includes spare time for the private life, then you should be careful always to keep that in mind, as your business grows.
There isn’t a general right moment which works for everybody. Cases differ from person to person. It may be an unexpected change in your life, pleasant or unpleasant, or just the need of changing something in life and becoming one’s own boss and having the liberty to choose the clients.
Still, total liberty is only a dream. Once you start your business, you’ll find out that money is your greatest boss. As nothing comes easy, you shouldn’t expect for miracles in the first six months, the least. This is why you need to have some money put aside for at least six months. The good news about starting a PR company is that it doesn’t require much capital to start with, but it takes time until the first clients arrive and also pay, so until then you need to have the living expenses covered.
Not everyone is suit to run a PR company. Being the represented of your own company, you need to be available most of the time for any potential client. Strategic thinking and planning must be combined with creativity. Managing both staff and figures is another important aspect. Any weakness in any of the areas can be taken care of by some training in advance.
You also need to decide the type of PR company you want to run. You can choose to associate with several other professionals and you won’t have to put them on the pay role, or employ people and run it the big family way. To start with, you need a vision according to your own personality and principles.
